Incoming freshmen are overwhelmed with new social order, personal management, personal responsibility, stress, newly defined relationships and the overwhelming need to feel like they are making positive strides towards success even if the results aren't immediate. Objective: DRILL PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, GOAL SETTING, and PURPOSEFUL/STRATEGIC ENGAGEMENT within the university...and by drill...we mean DRIIIIIILLLLLLLLLL...in a positive and supportive way that's funny, engaging and energetic :) Employability! - Make a Killing in Your Career Challenge: 75% of students graduate without ability to perform ‘real world tasks’. Students are focused on a single career path and believe that all they need to do is attend class in order to be marketable for future employment. Objective: To ensure students understand that college means going beyond the classroom in order to get the most out of their career, their development, and their opportunities. The Business of ‘Be the Change’ Challenge: 99.9% of students have the ‘I just want to make a difference’ attitude; but forget that good intentions need much more effort, preparation, attitude and purpose. Objective: To engage students in critical thinking about the purpose behind their goals, prepare students for the challenges they will face, create an unshakeable and empowering mindset, and equip students with the tools to build a career around their passion. Take Back College Challenge: The institution of Higher Education is under attack by…it seems like everyone…’is college worth it’, ‘college: the biggest gamble’, and headlines like these are all over, which are threatening the OPPORTUNITY of what college was meant to be! Objective: To engage students in an active approach to education and their college experience. Empowering them to explore, take risks, take advantage of, and grow themselves, their opportunities and all that college has to offer! Most college graduates think they deserve management positions upon entering their first job. Objective: To give students a framework for leadership, understanding that leadership is not easy, it’s a skill that takes purposeful development, that it’s a lot of fun, and that enthusiasm, passion, delegation, open mindedness and creative thinking are must haves! You Do Know! – Lessons in Communication Challenge: Students are finding a blurred line between professional and personal communication styles. Text-message talk is being used in emails, and ‘but I don’t know’ seems like the most common add-on to student opinions. What’s more is that employers are demanding higher quality of communicators! Objective: Give students the desire to further their communication skills, share principles to effective communication, introduce students the path to continued growth in verbal, purposeful communication! Get Real – Authenticity and Peer Pressure Management Challenge: So much of college is about defining who students are as individuals and the values they stand by and uphold, yet so much of the college environment can easily push students to become sheep! Objective: Give students the confidence to be individuals, the strategies to manage stress, the awareness of healthy relationships, and the courage to not fall into alcohol, drugs or other self-destructive ‘escape’ methods. |
